THE president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) asked the Filipino people to remain vigilant as some people have abused the people power for their selfish motives.
CBCP President and Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas said the EDSA people power ‘spirit’ has been abused, manipulated, raped and prostituted by those people
who took advantage of it.
“We should not look at EDSA from our point of view 28 years later, we should look at EDSA from the point of view of the Philippines, EDSA 1986, as some people have taken advantage of it,” Villegas said.
“Some people have misused people power, have abused people power for their own selfish motives,” he lamented.
At his homily on the 28th anniversary of the EDSA people power revolution, Villegas urged the Filipino people to allow EDSA “to make us wiser and to be more vigilant.”
He also showed displeasure at why the government chose to celebrate EDSA revolution in Cebu, City.
“If they want to celebrate EDSA in Cebu, Baguio, Mindanao, then let it be . . . but history cannot be changed anymore,” Villegas said.
On Tuesday, President Benigno Aquino 3rd together with his allies chose to celebrate the 28th EDSA anniversary in Cebu, where the historic “salubungan” was staged.
Earlier, political analyst Ramon Casiple said that politics more than history or humanitarian reasons-could be the basis of the decision of the government to transfer this year’s EDSA celebration in Cebu.
He said that the transfer in Cebu could actually be part of the Liberal Party’s strategy campaign for the 2016 national elections.
