Marking the 12th anniversary of the May 1 ,2001 Edsa Tres uprising that denounced the toppling of the presidency of Joseph Ejercito Estrada, a multi-sectoral group has declared their support for the ousted president’s candidacy as Manila mayor.
Union of the Masses for Democracy and Justice national Chairman Ver Eustaquio said his organization is targeting to contribute at least 100,000 votes for “Mayor Erap” in the May 13 local election.
“It’s a very modest projection. In our Manila chapter alone, we have 50,000 active members composed of the urban poor; jeepney drivers, tricycles and pedicabs; youths and many others. Nationwide we have about 250,000 members. Our target votes for Erap will come from our Manila-based relatives and friends of our national membership,” Eustaquio said.
He added: “We are fully supporting the mayoralty bid of Erap because we have known him as a leader with a big heart for the poor, and he is determined to uplift the life of the impoverished masses. We also find his urban renewal program for Manila the exact solution to the perennial problems of the city residents.”
Meanwhile, reelectionist Mayor Alfredo Lim and his running mate, Lou Veloso was warmly greeted yesterday by residents of vote-rich second district in Tondo.
Chants of “Mayor Lim!, Mayor Lim! Ikaw pa rin!” filled the air as Lim shook hands and gamely posed for photographs with excited residents in his house-to-house campaign to again win the votes of Manilenos.
