REGARDLESS of economic status, every Filipino has an inherent right to obtain quality education, Vice President Jejomar Binay said on Tuesday.
In his Rizal Day message, Binay, citing the principle of the National Hero, underscored the power of education to advance social progress.
Binay and President Benigno Aquino 3rd on Tuesday led the flag-raising ceremony at the Rizal Park marking the 118th anniversary of Rizal’s martyrdom.
“In his lifetime, Jose Rizal showed us the power of education to advance social progress. One of his advocacies was to use education in order to elevate the country and develop the people’s mentality, believing that only through education could the country be saved from domination,” the Vice President noted.
“Like Dr. Rizal, it has always been my conviction that every Filipino, regardless of economic status, has an inherent right to obtain quality education. And that quality education remains the greatest equalizer—the greatest tool to break the shackles of poverty—as it provides even the poorest individual a fighting chance to succeed in life,” he added.
Meanwhile, in his New Year message, Binay called on government workers to selflessly serve the people no matter their standing in life, without thought of reward.
“Our time, talents, energy, and resources must be focused on rendering effective governance and real service to those whom we have vowed to serve. It is my hope that we make a conscious effort to learn the lessons of the past year, and from there move forward with greater resolve to focus on goals that serve the greater good, and not personal or selfish ends,” he said.
The Vice President urged the people to heed Pope Francis’ call to renew commitment to Christ’s message of love and compassion, especially for the sick and indigent.
“Let us all harness our collective spirit and build a truly democratic nation that respects the dignity of all Filipinos. May we all have a happy, peaceful, and prosperous New Year!” he said.
