Elasto painters rout Mahindra in Antipolo

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters destroyed the Mahindra Floodbusters, 105-80, in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 41 Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City, Rizal on Wednesday.

Chris Tiu opened the second half, draining a three-pointer, 68-35. Anthony Washington scored an alley hoop off Beau Belga’s assist in the 8:49 minute mark, 70-35.

Mahindra’s Ryan Araña broke the dry spell after sinking a floater with 7:00 minutes remaining in the third quarter, 72-37.

Ronnie Matias drew a foul on Gary David with 4.2 second left in the period. David then split his free throws, 92-48.

The Floodbusters completed a 7-0 run with 2:14 minutes left in the match after Joseph Eriobu scored from his layup and dunk, and Josan Nimes completed his three-point play, 104-77. Russel Escoto closed the match with a trey, 105-83.

“Well, we played only three good quarters today. We’re lucky that we were able to get the win. I’ll take the win but it’s a poor fourth quarter for us. We could have done that better. We can play the way we played in the first three quarters but it didn’t come up. Their character in the fourth quarter wasn’t really good so I’m quite happy but disappointed,” said Rain or Shine head coach Caloy Garcia.

Garcia admitted that this team relaxed in the fourth period. “The way we finished the fourth quarter wasn’t the way what we wanted to see because I think we’re doing well, getting three-point shots. When it came in the fourth quarter, they were on their own. Others were hesitant taking open shots. And we had several turnovers in the fourth quarter and defensive side, we allowed them to attack the basket with no defense at all.”

With 7:04 minutes remaining in the first half, the Elasto Painters completed a 5-0 run as Maverick Ahanmisi completed his three-point play and Raymond Almazan hit a mid-range jumper, 37-24.

James Yap notched the 1000th three-pointer of his career in the 6:14 minute mark. Jeff Chan also banked another trey with 5:55 minutes remaining, 43-25.

The Elasto Painters maintained their lead as Jericho Cruz hit a three-pointer to close the first half, 61-32.

Cruz top scored for Rain or Shine with 15 points, while Ahanmisi had 14 markers. Tiu and Yap combined for 21 points. Philip Paniamogan, Alex Mallari, and Escoto led Mahindra with 10 markers apiece.

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters currently hold a 2-0 win-loss record, while the Mahindra Floodbusters have a 0-2 card.
