The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters beat the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters, 88-73, in a comeback victory during an elimination round game of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governors’ Cup at the University of St. La Salle gymnasium in Bacolod City on Saturday.
A rematch of last conference’s finals, Tropang Texters seized control of the game early on not allowing Rain or Shine to grab the lead for more than two and a half quarters.
Elasto Painters big man Wendell McKines kept his team’s spirit up the whole game, eventually scoring a three pointer late in the third quarter to tie the game at 55. He then set up for another basket that allowed Rain or Shine to grab the lead after trailing behind for over 30 minutes. Rain or Shine sustained their offense until the end of the third period leading to a 62-59 lead.
Rain or Shine delivered the finishing blow in the final period through an and-one slam by Gabe Norwood and back-to-back slam dunks by Raymond Almazan. The Elasto Painters posted the highest lead of the game at 15 by the end of the buzzer.
McKines finished with a game-high 28 points plus 16 rebounds and two steals. Bacolod’s hometown hero Jeff Chan delivered an inspiring performance with 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists not committing a single turnover.
Tropang Texters import Steffphon Pettigrew tallied a low 17 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Gilas Pilipinas stars Jayson Castro and Ranidel de Ocampo scored 16 and 13 points respectively.
But there were some rough parts of the game in “The City of Smiles.” In the third period, Kelly Williams was called for a foul for striking Beau Belga across the face.
Belga was involved in another scuffle in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter when he collided with Matt Ganuelas-Rosser in his attempt to inbound the ball. Belga got tagged for a regular foul.
By notching their second consecutive win; Rain or Shine is now bearing a 3-4 win-loss record, the same with Talk ‘N Text and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.
Talk n Text will battle the San Miguel Beermen in their next game on Tuesday, while the Elasto Painters face the struggling NLEX Road Warriors on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
