ILOILO CITY, Iloilo :The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) has reported a substantial decrease of coliform content at the Iloilo River, according to EMB head Raul Lorilla.
He told the Iloilo-Batiano River Development Council the decrease was attributed to the growing awareness of city residents and business establishments to save the river as anchor of development.
Lorilla said that nine out of 12 monitoring stations along the river showed a decrease in total coliform levels in 2014 as compared to levels in 2013.
The monitoring stations are at the Quirino Bridge, Forbes Bridge, Capenter’s Bridge, Sooc, Arevalo Bridge, Dungon Bridge, Calajunan downstream of dumpsite, Cala-junan downstream of industries and upstream of Calajunan Creek.
A total of 7,000 fish fingerlings of high salinity tolerance were dispersed at the Iloilo River starting at the Carpenter’s Bridge downstream to the river esplanade on Friday.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said marginal fishermen were prohibited to fish at this portion of the river using fine mesh nets to allow the fingerlings to mature and reproduce.
Senate President Franklin Drilon, a native of city, ordered the dispersal of white ducks to add beauty to the river and enhance tourism activities.
Kayaking is being encouraged at the river by providing a station for kayak boats at the ecopark of Brgy. San Pedro in Molo district.
