Enrile turns in ‘irrevocable resignation’

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Wednesday announced his ‘irrevocable resignation,” clearing the way for a change of leadership in the chamber.

Enrile made the announcement in a privilege speech during the Senate’s plenary session.

There have been speculation for weeks whether Enrile would be staying on as Senate president after he clashed with several senators towards the end of the 15th Congress over a number issues, including supposed “favoritism” in distributing maintenance and other operating expenses (MOOE) to senators.

|Enrile also lost his political base in the Senate after the May elections, with many of the senatorial winners pledging to support Sen. Franklin Drilon’s bid for the Senate leadership.
