Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada celebrated his birththday on Monday by distributing P10,000 cash and 10 kilos of rice each to Manila policemen.
Estrada celerated his 77th birthday on April 19, his first birthday as mayor of the city. He personally handed his gifts to the policemen during the flag raising ceremony. Some 2,000 Manila police personnel were present.
Estrada had promised to give each city lawman a P2,500 monthly allowance. The distributed P10,000 is equivalent to four months’ allowance.
The city chief executive said the allowance was funded through the taxes paid by street vendors in Divisoria, Quiapo and Sta. Cruz, including sellers in night markets.
Estrada vowed to provide cops with a monthly allowance to deter corruption and extortion.
The mayor also paraded 11 brand new Toyota Strada pick up trucks to be used as mobile patrols.
