Jessica Lucilla “Gigi” Reyes, the former chief of staff of Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile, received a surprise guest on Tuesday when she was visited by former President and now Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada in her detention cell at the Sandiganbayan.
She was the second high-profile inmate to be visited by a former President. On Monday, Enrile was visited by former President Fidel Ramos in Camp Crame, the Philippine National Police headquarters in Quezon City.
Estrada, who gave his moral support to his eldest son, Sen. Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada, who is also facing plunder charges in connection with the pork barrel scam, described Reyes’ detention place as “very inhuman” and not suited for a female detainee. His visit lasted only 15 minutes.
The elder Estrada told reporters that Reyes was barred from speaking privately with her mother who visited on Monday.
He recalled that he and Reyes are “good friends” for more than two decades, way back in 1987 when he and Enrile were both elected as senators and the only opposition members of the Senate.
Reyes surrendered to the Sandiganbayan Third Division last Friday after the anti-graft issued separate warrants of arrest against her, his former boss and other co-respondents including alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles.
