Escalona bags two gold medals in kayak race


Former national team member Janette Escallona copped two gold medals at the start of the canoe-kayak/dragonboat competitions of the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission (POC-PSC) Philippine National Games on Friday at the Manila Bay in Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

The 27-year-old Escallona ruled the women’s kayak touring 5,000-meter race in 30 minutes and 25.14 seconds, ahead of silver medalist Rosalyn Esguerra (31:27.95) and bronze winner Leonita Banlat (34:28.11).

Escallona later on connived with Edgar Galang in topping the kayak touring 5,000m mixed event with a time of 35:14.89. They beat second placers Florence Caro and Madonna Cadion (36:16.45) and third placers Hermie Macaranas and Mary Jhoy Cacal (36:26.42).

In kayak racing 5,000m men’s single, Alex Generalo submitted 20:56.66 in nipping Daniel Ortega, who settled for silver with 21:05.64 and Edward Galang, who registered 22:26.54 for bronze.

Other winners are gold medalist Reggie Palatao (29:02.52) and silver medalist Kim Gabriel (29:11.34) in kayak touring 5,000m men’s single; and gold medalist Ojay Fuentes (26:18.92), silver medalist Reymart Nevado (27:33.83) and Dany Funelas (30:21.70) in canoe racing 5,000m men’s single.

The canoe-kayak/dragonboat com­­petitions will resume today with nine gold medals at stake in the 500m distance events—canoe racing single men, kayak racing single men, kayak touring single (men and wo­men), dragonboat mixed, men and women (20-seater and 10-seater) and D2 mixed.
