FORMER Armed Forces Chief of Staff Hermogenes Esperon Jr. said on Sunday that his military expertise and his experience in the Cabinet would be put to good use as National Security Adviser of the incoming administration of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte. Describing it as a very challenging job, Esperon, a member of the Philippine Military Class of 1974, said he is honored to be appointed by Duterte as his NSA. “I’m honored to become part of his Cabinet especially so that he [Duterte] is pushing for several reforms in the government. So we will be focusing on national security,” said Esperon. He explained that the position of NSA is very broad because among its concerns are national sovereignty and the strengthening of institutions. “So I hope that with my experience, bureaucracy from military as well as the Cabinet, I could be put to [good]use as we go about national building,” he pointed out. After his stint in the AFP, Esperon was appointed as the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process and later on as Cabinet Secretary, Presidential Management Staff (PMS) during the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, now a representative of the second district of Pampanga.
