Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle will formally proclaim and dedicate the Espiritu Santo Parish Church in Sta. Cruz as an archdiocesan shrine on June 8.According to the Archdiocese of Manila, the formal declaration will be made during the 8 a.m. Mass of His Eminence in the said church.“We pray that this action will contribute to true renewal of the Church of the Archdiocese of Manila,” the cardinal said in the decreePetitioners for the parish to become a shrine were parish priest, Msgr. Alberto Salonga and the parish community.
The Parish of Espiritu Santo was established on December 19, 1926. It was formerly placed under the administration of the Society of the Divine Word Fathers (SVD).
The SVD priests turned over the Espiritu Santo Parish to the diocesan clergy with Msgr. Gorgonio Encarnacion as first diocesan parish priest.
The church was fully completed and solemnly blessed on May 14, 1932. Fr. William Finneman, SVD was its first parish priest.
Among other parish priests to serve the church for 16 years were Msgr. Emmanuel Sunga and Msgr. Norberto Habos. Msgr. Salonga.
Tagle said shrines are places of special devotion of the faithful to a particular title of Christ, of the Holy Spirit or of the Blessed Mother, and to the saints.
