Ronel Estanislao and Joella De Vera survived Philip Joper Escueta and Eleanor Christine Inlayo, 21-17, 18-21, 21-17, to claim the mixed doubles title in the of the Smart National Open Badminton Tournament held at the Powersmash Badminton Center in Makati City.
Estanislao, and De Vera bagged the P120,000 champion’s prize.
Mark Shelly Alcala, on the other hand, topped the men’s singles.
Alcala started his impressive run by ousting national mainstay Antonino Tobi Gadi in the quarterfinals then followed it up with a semifinal win against national junior standout Ross Leenard Pedrosa.
The 15-year-old Alcala continued his onslaught as he stunned another national player Michael Kevin Cudiamat in finals, 21-17, 17-21, 21-14, to pocket the P100,000 top purse in the tournament supported by the Manny V. Pangilinan Sports Foundation, Philippine Badminton Association, Smart Live More, Sun Cellular, Smash Philippines, Babolat and powered by Fourth Right event.
The national tournament, sponsored by Smart Telecommunication’s Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan and sanctioned by the PBA, was participated by more than 500 players nationwide.
Chinese badminton coach Lili Wang, meanwhile, defeated national junior player Sarah Joy Barredo, 21-10, 15-21, 21-17, to claim the women’s open title and the P100 thousand pesos cash prize.
