Davao del Norte: Martin James Esteban posted the first record-breaking feat in athletics as Davao region bagged two gold medals in the tennis team event of the 58th Palarong Pambansa at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex in Tagum City on Wednesday.
Esteban’s 15.01 meters in the triple jump shattered the 14.44 record of Mark Harry Diones of Bicol Region during the 2010 Tarlac Palarong Pambansa.
“I didn’t expect to break a record because my focus was to win a gold,” the 17-year-old Esteban told The Manila Times in an interview. “I feel so happy about it. I really like to compete abroad and become a member of the Philippine team.”
Esteban, an incoming Education freshman student in Angeles University Foundation, also won a silver medal in the triple jump event of the ASEAN Schools Championships in December with 15.09 meters behind Malaysian champion Nik Ab Hadi who posted 15.12 meters.
Northern Mindanao’s Kirk Cire Bacas finished second with 14.26 meters while Central Visayas bet John Marvin Rafols with 14.23 meters finished third.
The 6’1 Esteban, who graduated recently in Balitucan National High School, also won a silver medal by posting 6.96 meters in the secondary boys’ long jump behind Jose Jerry Belibestre Jr. who notched 7.15.
The other gold medalists in athletics were Southern Tagalog’s Kenneth Rafanan who posted 14.68-meter in the secondary boys’ shot put and Gilbert Rutaquio who notched a time record of 9:50.0 in the secondary boys’ steeplechase.
Matt Atanas of Western Visayas won his second gold medal after winning the elementary boys’ long jump with 1.63 meters. His won first gold was in the triple jump event on Tuesday.
Western Visayas took another gold medal through Jamella de Asis who topped the elementary girls’ shot put event with 10.59 meters.
In the team tennis event, Davao, bannered by Shaira Hope Rivera, Patricia Velez, Marivic Salvador, Nicole Ann Bautista and Danna Mariella Abad, swept the Mindoro Marinduque Romblon and Palawan (Mimaropa) region, 2-0, to bag the gold medal.
Davao boys team, bannered by Christian Fel Lopez, Jaffary Cariaga, Jomari Justin Guira, Elwin Centillas and Nenette Morales, whipped Central Visayas, 2-0, to rule the boys’ class.
In the boys’ secondary archery competition, Central Luzon’s Atanacio Pellicer 3rd ruled the 30 and 40-meter events to bag two gold medals.
Pellicer posted 349 in the 30-meter event to beat Quint Amongan of Cordillera (340) and Ryan Dave Pecolados of Davao (338). He scored 328 to defeat Quint Amongan (319) and William Ty of Region 1 (314) in the 40-meter class.
National Capital Region, the perennial champion, is still leading with a 21-22-13 gold-silver-bronze medal tally. At No.2 is Southern Tagalog with 16-9-17 and Western Visayas at No.3 with 14-12-13 at the time of this writing.
