Team Sante Barley standout Robinsons Esteves led the winners in the 2016 Tri Ilocos Norte 4 held at the Playa Tropical Resort in Currimao, Ilocos Norte over the weekend.
Esteves dominated the 111.3-kilometer event (2km swim, 90km bike, 21km run) with a time record of four hours, 41 minutes and 38 seconds.
“Nahirapan ako sa last run dahil sobrang init. Noong nagba-bike naman ako malakas ‘yung hangin at may part na rough road, mga 500 meters iyon. Ito ‘yung first 113km triathlon ko kaya sobrang saya na nanalo,” Esteves said.
Finishing second was Benjie Zapanta with 5:01:50 and Harly Baguistan third with 5:29:05.
In the women’ s division, Sandi Abahan won with a time record of 5:38:18. Rowena Valdez and Michelle Vinluan finished second and third with 6:16:53 and 6:33:40, respectively.
Jet Ramos and Mirasol Abad dominated the standard (51.5km) category.
Ramos finished the 1.5km-40km-10km swim-bike-run race in 2:10:57 beating second placer Neil Adrian Aynera (2:13:29) and third placer Jonathan Arellano (2:13:46).
Abad topped the race with a time record of 2:32:18 against Cynthia May Ras’ 2:52:28 and Lou Ramos’ 2:57:58.
Fourteen-year old Josh Ramos from Baguio City conquered the Sprint category (750m – 20km- 5km) with a time record of 1:18:48.
“Hindi ko ini-expect na makuha ko ‘yung overall Sprint. Nagtiwala lang ako sa Diyos at sa training ko,” said Ramos who ran the race with his parents.
Ramos’ teammate Neil Nazarro finished second with 1:19:18 while Antonio Lavadia third with 1:22:19.
In the women’s sprint class, former national swimming team member Luica Dacanay won with 1:38:53 followed by Meryl Legaspi with 1:40:52 and Lauren Jover 1:43:33.
Hi Factor Tri North ruled the 111.3km race while Mayon Tri Team dominated the 51.5km event.
“I am happy with the coordination with the police and the Marines at ‘yung suporta ng mga tao dito lalo na ng Provincial Government ng Ilocos Norte,” tournament director Mikey Chua said.
“For our event, we created a word which is “trication” means a triathlon and a vacation. They came here to compete and at the same time, na-enjoy nila ‘yung culture ng mga taga rito at mga tourists spots dito,” added Chua.
The tournament aims to promote not just an active lifestyle but also sports and tourism in the region. “Hopefully, a bigger and better year for Tri Ilocos Norte 5,” he said.
The 2nd Tigasin Triathlon, the second part of the series, will take place in Bolinao, Pangasinan on May 14. After the Northern Luzon races, Trisports will hold four activities namely Turbo Sprint at Riviera Sports and Country Club in Cavite, Biathle and Aquathlon at PhilSports Complex in Pasig City and Enduro Sprint at Canyon Cove Resort in Batangas.
