Estrada slams 891 barangay chairmen blocking anti-drug drive

Manila Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada expressed disappointment over the refusal of 891 barangay (village) chairmen to submit the list of drug users in their jurisdiction after only six village chiefs complied with an earlier request. On Wednesday, he ordered the Manila Barangay Bureau head, Arsenio Lacson Jr., to require the barangay chairmen to submit to the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council their list of suspected drug users and pushers referred for counseling and rehabilitation. To date 10,174 drug suspects have surrendered while 92 drug suspects were killed during police operations. Estrada told The Manila Times that his men are having difficulty convincing the chairmen to cooperate for fear that they might become unpopular in their respective communities.
