Philippine Azkals goalkeeper Neil Etheridge stepped up in Walsall FC’s 2-0 win against Peterborough United FC in the League One tournament on Monday.

Etheridge, who has been with the club since July, has been a vital force in the campaign as Walsall captured the top seeding and secured one of two promotion seats.

More popularly known in England as the Saddlers, Walsall FC is a club that plays in the Sky Bet League One tournament in the third tier of the English Football pyramid.

During the match, Etheridge played quality minutes to ensure that his team ended the year on top of the standings as they slipped past sixth seed Peterborough.

Despite a quick start to the heated meeting of the two squads, no goals were converted until the final nine minutes of the affair when the Saddlers finally took over the match.

Walsall defender Jason Demetriou struck the opening goal of the game in the 81st minute from a pass from the midfield by Jason Evans to overtake Peterborough.

Evans, on the other hand, sealed the win of the Saddlers with a shot of his own from close range to nullify the offense of Peterborough in the 89th minute.

Consequently, close calls were parried away by the sturdy hands of Etheridge to bring home another clean sheet for his new found home in West Midlands.

With the win, Walsall has tied with Burton Albion FC with 48 points in 23 games but the latter has the edge by nine points on goal difference.

    1. Top of the standings after the first half of the season. What “secured 1 of the 2 promotion seats” are you talking about? Haba pa ng season brad! Top seed? Is the league heading to knockout format from hereon? Horrendous sports reporting. Do not confuse “place” with “seed”. Also, they did not overtake Peterborough after Demetriou’s goal since it just broke a 0-0 tie at that point. You can not overtake if you are not behind. They just simply took the lead.

Head’s up though, January will be interesting as League One teams usually sell players at that time. So pag naibenta nila magagaling nila, there might not even be a promotion to talk about. Baka pati si Neil maibenta.
