Evacuees in Manila scramble for relief goods

Riot nearly erupted at Baseco Compound on Monday morning when residents fought over relief goods brought in by a non-government organization (NGO).

The commotion happened while the NGO officers were still talking with City Hall personnel.

Some residents, mostly men, were able to grab some bags and sacks of relief goods.

A number of residents suffered bruises during the scramble, but no one was seriously injured. About 500 families took refuge at Baseco compound.

Social welfare officers admitted that they don’t have enough relief goods.

However, they urged NGOs who plan to give assistance bring to coordinate in advance for the proper distribution of goods.

Vice Mayor Isko Moreno visited the evacuees at Baseco Compound, as well as families who took shelter in evacuation centers in Parola, Isla Puting Bato, Apelan and Barangay B-20.

Evacuations were started as early as Saturday afternoon after the weather bureau announced that Typhoon Ruby would pass Metro Manila Sunday evening.
