FORMER Armed Forces chief of staff general Delfin Bangit lost his fight with colon cancer and died late Friday at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City. He was 58.
Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, AFP public information chief, confirmed the death of Bangit, a member of Philippine Military Academy (PMA) class 1978.
Bangit was the last AFP chief appointed by former President Gloria Arroyo.
Zagala said that flags in all military camps nationwide were lowered in half-mast as sign of mourning for their departed former chief.
Bangit headed the elite Presidential Security Group, the Intelligence Service of AFP and the Philippine Army before being appointed as military chief in March 2010.
He opted to retire early in June 2010 after then-President-elect Benigno Aquino 3rd made it known in public that he doesn’t want Bangit to be his chief of staff.
