• Ex-Cavite vice mayor, ex-SAF officer meted life for kidnapping


    A FORMER vice mayor in Cavite town and four others, including a former officer of the elite Special Action Force (SAF), were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Pasay City Regional Trial Court recently for kidnapping with double murder.

    Philippine National Police (PNP) Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) said, found guilty were Victor Caruncong, former vice mayor of Dasmarinas (now a city) and Chief Insp. Exequiel Cautiver, former commanding officer of the PNP-SAF in Fort Sto. Domingo.

    Also found guilty in the same case were Cautiver’s wife, Chief Insp. Penelope Cautiver, Mariano Deleon alias “Spider” and Alejandro Entrolizo.

    RTC Judge Eugenio Dela Cruz of Branch 117 sentenced the accused to maximum penalties of reclusion perpetua or life imprisonment.

    PNP-AKG officer-in-charge, Senior Supt. Amando Lagiwid, in his report to PNP Chief, Director Gen. Ronald dela Rosa said that on June 27, 2008 the accused kidnapped Demosthenes Canete, a businessman and retired pilot of the Philippine Airlines, and his driver Allan Garay.

    The accused demanded P20 million ransom and threatened to kill the victims if the ransom was not paid.

    The kidnappers were arrested after receiving the ransom. The bodies of the victims were later recovered in Pampanga.
