Ex-LTO chief Torres dies

THE FORMER head of the Land Transportation Office Virginia Torres died on Saturday due to a heart attack, her brother Ruben said on Saturday.

She was 62.

In an interview aired over radio station DZMM, Ruben said his sister died at the Medical City in Clark, Pampanga, to where she was rushed for medical treatment on January 1 after she complained of chest and back pains.

He said Torres collapsed on her way to the bathroom.

She will be buried this week in La Paz, Tarlac.

Torres, a close friend and shooting buddy of President Benigno Aquino 3rd, has been in public service for the past three decades. She was appointed to the LTO in June 2010 when Aquino took office. She resigned in October 2013.

A member of the Iglesia ni Cristo group, Torres became controversial when she was caught on a CCTV camera gambling in a casino. She was also accused of negotiating for the release of smuggled sugar worth P100 million seized by the Bureau of Customs.
