Batangas: The former Mayor of Mataas Na Kahoy was gunned down by still unidentified suspects in his town before noon on Sunday.
Senior Inspector Alfredo Lorin Jr., Mataas Na Kahoy police chief, identified the victim as 57-year-old Arnulfo Rivera of Barangay Calingatan, who was mayor of Mataas na Kahoy from 1998 to 2001.
According to report, Rivera had just attended Sunday mass in their chapel in Barangay Calingatan and was walking home when the gunman followed him and shot him twice in the head around 10:00 a.m.
Witnesses said the gunman escaped on a motorcycle and fled towards an unknown direction.
Rivera was rushed to Mary Mediatrix Hospital in Lipa City for treatment but later died around 12:15 p.m.
Police recovered two spent shells of .45 caliber pistol from the crime scene.
Probers have yet to determine the motive and the identities of the gunman.
