Ex-MMDA chief, Aquino still ‘close’

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union: The relationship between President Benigno Aquino 3rd and former Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino, including Liberal Party (LP) presidential candidate Manuel Roxas 2nd is still intact.

Tolentino said here recently that despite his resignation from Aquino’s Cabinet as MMDA chairman, he keeps in touch with the President by talking to him almost weekly.

“We are the best of friends. This has nothing to do with politics. I still maintain close contact with the President and also with Secretary Mar [Roxas’ nickname],” he added.

Tolentino decided to run as an independent senatorial candidate after he requested to be out from the LP line-up because of a controversy supposedly involving him and a number of politicians and the dance group “Playgirls.”

“I haven’t seen changes in our friendship. I support the President and I support the daang matuwid [straight path]policy,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tolentino is thankful to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s endorsement of his senatorial bid and also to other local government executives including Mayor Pablo Ortega here.

“I thanked Mayor Duterte because he is a respected leader in the Visayas and Mindanao. His endorsement will be a big boost for me,” he said after visiting City Hall here.

Ortega promised Tolentino to help him in his senatorial campaign.
