Ex-vice mayor, two others slain in wake shootout

FORMER Vice Mayor Dante Guzman of Dolores town in Abra and two others were killed in a shootout on Friday night during a wake in the town poblacion.

Dolores town police chief Senior Inspector Ricky Dangiwan identified the other fatalities as PO3 Dindo Guzman, brother of the former vice mayor, and Jun Cabanawan who is reportedly the bodyguard of Dolores Mayor Robert Victor Seares.

PO3 Guzman was reportedly assigned with the municipal police office in Bangued, the provincial capital.

Dolores town police said the two other reported bodyguards of the mayor, identified as Jeffrey Barbonia and Christian Corpuz were also among those involved in the shootout following a card game row during the wake.

Police said the mayor was not in the crime scene during the incident which broke out after Corpuz assaulted Guzman’s group by banging their table where they were playing card game.

Guzman’s group and the mayor’s aides resorted to armed confrontation after a heated altercation; also injured by stray bullets were three residents attending the wake.

Police said Corpuz voluntarily surrendered after the incident while Barbonia is still at large.

During the last elections, the slain former vice mayor did not file any elective position. He fielded instead his brother David against Seares.
