A HUGE explosion triggered a three-hour fire that hit a former firearms and ammunition warehouse in Pililia, Rizal province on Wednesday evening, damaging a nearby house and a gasoline station.
Rizal Provincial Police Director Bernabe Balba said the explosion started a fire inside the old LGS Motor Factory compound in Sitio Combo that was allegedly being used as a warehouse for ammunition.
The warehouse, he said, contains several gas tanks and chemicals intended for cleaning engines such as cutting oil solvent and lacquer thinner.
“We are now conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. The incident is purely (an) accidental explosion brought about by chemical substances,” he added, noting that based on initial findings the incident is not a handiwork of terrorists or political private armed groups.
Balba said the warehouse was formerly used by LGS motors to assemble jeepneys and was registered under the name of Nida Fontolan Decena.
The shop is also used by the Floro International Corporation, which is owned by Victorino Floro and Victorian Floro 3rd, who used to enter into firearms and ammunition contracts with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police.
Balba said the fire, which reached third alarm, damaged a nearby house and the gasoline station but firefighters prevented it from spreading further.
There were no reported casualties in the incident.
