• No extended hours for MRT, LRT for Christmas

OPERATING hours of major malls in Metro Manila will be adjusted on Friday, November 28, but the country’s twin mass transit systems will not go along for the ride.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino told radio station DZMM that mall operations will start at 11 in the morning and end at 11 in the evening.

Tolentino said 100 percent of the malls in Metro Manila agreed to his proposal to avoid the huge traffic due to the holiday rush.

The new mall operations will start on November 28, and will continue until January 3, 2015. Among the malls that committed include the SM Malls, Ayala Malls, Robinsons, Lucky Chi-natown, Waltermart, Fisher Mall, Shangri-La Malls, Araneta and others.

The schedules will also change on December 24, 25, 31 and January 1.

Tolentino said there will be increased police visibility at the malls.

“Magte-train din po kami ng mga additional security guards for traffic management para makatulong po sa mall operators,” he said.

He enlisted the help of the mass transit systems.

“‘Yung ating mga bus [sana]ay makasabay din po ng schedule maging [ang]ating MRT/LRT. Susulatan ko po si Secretary Abaya nang sa ganoon ay ma-synchronize po ito,” he said.

But Tolentino’s plea apparently failed to convince the mass transit systems, as there will be no extended hours for the Light and Metro Rail Transit.

LRT Authority spokesman Hernando Cabrera said this is not possible at this time.

The LRT Line 1 links Roose-velt in Quezon City and Bac-laran in southern Metro Manila. Line 2 links C.M. Recto in Manila and Santolan.

MRT-3 links North Avenue in Quezon City and Taft Avenue in Pasay City via Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA).

On weekdays, the LRT-1 starts trips at 5 a.m., with the last northbound train leaving Baclaran at 9:30 p.m. and the last southbound train leaving Roosevelt at 10 p.m.

On weekends, the last trips are 30 minutes earlier.

LRT-2 starts trips at 5 a.m., with the last train leaving Santolan for Recto at 9:30 p.m. and the last trip from Recto to Santolan at 10 p.m.

On weekends, the last trips are 30 minutes earlier.

    MRT-3 starts trips from 4:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends.
