• FAITH aims for hoops, volley titles in NCAA South

Action goes full swing as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) South officially opened on Thursday in Tanauan, Batangas.

Season host First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities (FAITH) led the opening rites that saw performances from Asia’s Got Talent first winner El Gamma Penumbra. They performed a shadow play titled “Choose Philippines. Choose Tanauan. Choose FAITH.”

The NCAA-South Season 18 theme song “Keep the Flame Ablaze” was also played during the opening rites.

“Well, we expect a very exciting season because we just don’t want this event to play our games. We want them to experience not only competition but friendship among teams,” said FAITH Managing Director Juan Lozano.

Lozano said FAITH would be gunning for basketball and volleyball titles this season. Last year, the FAITH Bravehearts bagged gold medals in chess and beach volleyball events.

“Well, we think we have good chances in basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball and chess. Yet, we do not have an overall title,” Lozano added.

Last season’s host Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba (CSJL) awarded the overall championship trophies to De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) in the juniors division and University of Perpetual Help System-Laguna (UPHS-L), the six-peat champions in the seniors division.

NCAA-South has 11 participating schools, namely FAITH, CSJL, DLSL, Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas (LPU-B), Philippine Christian University-Dasmariñas (PCU-D), San Pablo Colleges (SPC), UPHSL, San Beda College-Alabang (SBCA), University of Batangas (UB), Saint Francis of Assisi College-Alabang (SFCA), and Emilio Aguinaldo College-Cavite (EAC).

In its 18th edition, the schools will compete for titles in basketball, volleyball, chess, football, badminton, table tennis, swimming, tae kwon do, beach volleyball, and futsal as a demonstration sport.

The basketball tournament will start on September 13 with FAITH facing SPC at 8:00 a.m., EAC going against LPU-B at 10:00 a.m., DLSL battling CSJL at 12:00 p.m., and UB taking SBCA at 4:00 p.m. in the men’s division at FAITH Isaac Extension.

Meanwhile, the volleyball tournament will commence on September 17 as SBCA, FAITH, UPHSL will face CSJL, EAC, and SFAC, respectively in the women’s division at FAITH covered court.
