Falcons, Maroons notch slim wins in UAAP football

The Adamson University (ADU) Soaring Falcons and the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons posted slim victories in the elimination round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) football tournament at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Quezon City on Thursday.

Fighting Maroons have improved their record to two wins, a draw and a loss to take the fourth spot in the rankings while the Falcons move one spot higher to seventh place with a win and three losses.

The UP booters slipped past home team Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles, 1-0, to clinch their second win in the tournament.

The Fighting Maroons started the match aggressively pounding the Atenean defense with quick raids.

The relentless assaults of UP paid off after 29 minutes of action with a goal by Kyle Magdato.

ADMU, led by Jarvey Gayoso and Mikko Mabanag, attempted to retaliate with their own goal but failed until the end of regulation.

In the other match, the Soaring Falcons scored a 1-0 victory against the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors.

The Adamson football team, returning from a long hiatus, earned their first three points since the 66th season of the competition.

At the beginning of the game, it appears that UE had better chances of winning but Adamson kept its composure to consistently thwart their foes’ attacks while launching attacks of their own. The game though entered halftime in a goalless deadlock.

UE sustained its onslaught after the break led by Allen Lacsamana and Bon Opena but ADU keeper Carl Viray foiled their attempts.

In the dying minutes of the bout, Adamson’s Bless Brian Jumo scored a goal to secure the win for his crew.
