LOS ANGELES: A female spectator was struck by a foul ball and carted off on a stretcher during the seventh inning of the Chicago White Sox’s 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday (Saturday in Manila).

The fan was sitting in the lower boxes on the first-base side near the Tampa Bay dugout when she was hit by a foul off the bat of Rays batter Steven Souza.

The game in St. Petersburg, Florida was delayed for about 10 minutes while the fan received medical attention.

There were no immediate reports on the fan’s condition.

Efforts were made during the offseason to install protective netting around the baseball field, but Souza’s ball appeared to slide through a gap in the net.
