Super featherweight Michael “The Hammer Fist” Fareñas will fight Mexican Jesus Rios in a 10-round main event bout entitled First Blood at the Solaire Resort and Casino in Pasay City tonight.
Fareñas, 29, who holds 34-4-4 win-loss-draw card with 28 knockouts, and Rios (26-4-1, 20 KOs) have no trouble in making it within the 130-pound weight limit.
A win by the Filipino will increase his chance of getting a title fight against World Boxing Organization super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia.
“I just have to do my best and I feel confident that this will be a great fight,” said Farenas, who won his last two consecutive fights by knockout. “My opponent will come after me, but I’m ready to give my very best.”
Fareñas earned the respect of boxing fans worldwide though he lost to Cuban slugger Yuriorkis Gamboa by unanimous decision in December 2012 because of his never-say-die attitude.
Rios is returning to the ring after a two-year break.
In the bantamweight matches, Dodie Boy Peñalosa (11-0-0, 11 KOs) will fight against Alem Robles (6-3-2, 2 KOs) while Richard Pumicpic (13-5-2, 4 KOs) will take on Luis Lugo (15-4-2, 11 KOs).
