FC Meralco Manila and Global Cebu FC battle for the top spot in the Philippines Football League (PFL) today at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.
The two former United Football League champions clash for the first time in the inaugural season at 4 p.m.
Meralco Manila shoots for its eighth win to reclaim the seat atop the standings, which was stolen by Kaya FC-Makati via a goal difference advantage following its 5-2 thrashing of Ilocos United FC at the University of Makati Football Stadium.
Besides returning to the No. 1 position, the Sparks are also raring to recover from a 0-7 beatdown to the other Visayan powerhouse in Ceres Negros FC last week.
“We want to make amends and bounce back. That score doesn’t reflect who we are,” said Meralco captain James Younghusband.
Global Cebu, however, is eager to get its first taste of the pole position as it eyes to notch its seventh win.
“We have to get the three points. We will go 100 percent. The top of the table is where Global belongs,” said midfielder Misagh Bahadoran.
The booters from the South are currently on No. 3, holding a 6-3-2 win-draw-loss record with 21 points.
In its previous outing, Global squandered the chance to grab the top spot as it settled for a goalless draw against the determined Davao Aguilas FC last Saturday at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Meanwhile, Ceres Negros heads back home to host Davao Aguilas at 7 p.m. at the Panaad Park and Football Stadium in Bacolod City.
The Yellow Busmen aim to make it three wins in a row after their identical 7-0 demolition of Ilocos United and Meralco in their last two matches.
But the Aguilas are expected to capitalize again on their solid defense, which they employed against Global resulting in a scoreless stalemate.
