FDC Misamis Power Corp. has sought the approval of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to develop and operate dedicated point-to-point limited facilities to connect its coal-fired power plant to the Mindanao grid.
Connecting its power facility to the grid is expected to help address increasing electricity demand in Mindanao which has been experiencing under-generation since 2010, the company said.
It noted that existing capacity in the region consists of more than 50 percent hydroelectric power plants, which are dependent on the availability of water and affected by weather conditions.
FDC Misamis is currently constructing a 405-megawatt (three units of 135 MW each) circulating fluidized bed coal-fired thermal power plant within the Phividec Industrial Estate in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.
In order to supply the energy generated by the plant to the public, FDC Misamis needs to connect it to the Mindanao grid, the company said.
For this purpose, the company plans to construct a connection asset for its exclusive use, which will connect the plant directly to the Villanueva substation of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).
The proposed interconnection of the plant to NGCP’s Villanueva substation consists of a 138 kV [kilovolt]transmission line approximately seven kilometers in length.
“The connection of the plant to the Mindanao grid through NGCP’s Villanueva substation was determined to be the most technically and economically viable option,” said FDC Misamis in its petition with ERC.
The design was made by First Northeast Electric Power Engineering Co. (NEPC), an affiliate of China Energy Engineering Group Co. Ltd., in coordination with Central Southern China Electric Power Design Institute.
The erection and installation of the connection asset will be spearheaded by EEI Corp., one of the leading construction companies in the country.
The company expects to complete construction of the connection asset by the fourth quarter of this year. It has prioritized the completion of the connection asset to ensure that the same is ready for the start of testing and commissioning of Unit 1 of the project in the first quarter of 2016.
