Bantamweight Mariano Fernandez dominated Guyanese Imran Khan to give the Philippine boxing team its third win in four outings in the ongoing Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) Championship at the Baluan Sholak Palace of Sports in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Fernandez, 20, shorter by about 4 inches than his rival, delivered a three-four punch combination to get the nod of the three judges, 30-27, 30-27 and 30-26 in the international boxing competition participated in by 457 boxers from 100 countries.
Earlier, Roldan Boncales and Mark Anthony Barriga also beat their Guatemalan and Vietnamese rivals though Dennis Galvan lost to Gaybatullla Gadzhialiyev of Azerbaijan in the other bout.
Boncales will again fight on Friday against North Korea’s Ri Chung Il, who won the gold medal in the recent Korotkov Memorial Tournament in Khabarovsk, Russia. Barriga on the other hand, returns to the ring on Saturday against No. 5 seed Yovani Vieira Soto of Cuba, a London Olympian.
