BELGRADE: Radek Stepanek led the Czech Republic to victory in the Davis Cup finals and said he was surprised that Serbia neglected to select Novak Djokovic for the crucial doubles.
“It’s as if they left a Ferrari in a garage. And it cost me ten euros—I bet he’d play,” said Stepanek.
World number two Djokovic won both his singles rubbers in straight sets in the weekend final against Stepanek and Tomas Berdych.
But he sat out the key doubles on Saturday where Berdych and Stepanek comfortably saw off Ilija Bozoljac and Nenad Zimonjic.
The decision proved crucial as the Czechs won the final 3-2 after Serbia’s rookie singles player Dusan Lajovic was defeated in both of his outings.
