The Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws eye to barge into the winning column against the University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 women’s basketball tournament on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Undefeated National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs handed the Lady Tamaraws their ninth loss, 78-42, last November 5.
NU relied on the prowess of its starters Gemma Miranda, Afril Bernardino, Jack Animam, Ria Nabalan, and Monique del Carmen who scored 67 points against FEU’s 27.
“It’s (NU) really a big fish. We expected that. Before the game started, I told them to lessen their turnovers. I need all of my point guards but my first point guard (Reyna Capua) had seven turnovers, the next point guard (Precious Arellado) had eight so that’s already 15. The other wingman-point guard (Loraine Ventura) had four. They already had 19 turnovers,” said FEU head coach Bert Flores.
The Lady Tamaraws tallied a total of 38 turnovers, while the Lady Bulldogs only had 21.
Angelica Gerner owned the lone bright spot for the green-and-gold squad with a double-double outing of 16 markers and 12 boards.
“For our last two games, we’ll improve the game that we had against NU. UP is next so we have to lessen our turnover and we have to plan our defense because both teams are almost the same. We need one game at a time since we still have two games left. There would be a possibility of a rumble in the standings, we don’t know yet who will be fourth,” Flores added.
With the loss, the FEU Lady Tamaraws landed at seventh place with a 3-9 win-loss card, while the UP Lady Maroons took the last spot at 1-10.
The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigresses keep their final four hopes alive as they face the Adamson University (AdU) Lady Falcons at 8 a.m.
The Lady Falcons are No.4 with a 5-6 record, while the Growling Tigresses are No.5 with a 5-7 card.
