Far Eastern University (FEU) outlasted De La Salle University in a dramatic 15-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 16-14 victory to force a do-or-die showdown for the last finals slot of University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 women’s volleyball competition on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Bernadeth Pons racked up 22 points on 20 kills, one block and one ace, while Remy Palma added 18 points and Toni Rose Basas piled up 15 kills along with two service points and a block for 17 points to lead FEU.
FEU and La Salle will clash in sudden-death match on Wednesday at the same venue to determine which team will reigning Ateneo De Manila University will be facing in the finals.
Kim Dy led La Salle with 17 kills and three blocks for 20 points.
In the men’s semifinals, Adamson University rallied past National University (NU) 23-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22 to forge a do-or-die showdown for a finals slot next week.
Dave Pletado tallied 12 kills and four blocks for 16 points, while Jerome Sarmiento had 14 points, 13 on kills, and Michael Sudaria added 13 points to help the Falcons equalize the Bulldogs’ twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four.
Paolo Pablico also contributed 11 points for the Falcons.
After losing the first set, the Falcons, who ended the elimination round at third with 9-5 win-loss record, kept their aggression in the remaining sets to score the come-from-behind win. The Bulldogs secured the No. 2 place after finishing with a 10-4 win-loss record.
Madz Gampong and James Natividad powered NU with 20 and 18 points, respectively but those points were not enough.
JOSEF T. RAMOS
