FAR Eastern University (FEU) overwhelmed University of the Philippines (UP), 25-14, 26-24, 25-20, for a winning start yesterday in the UAAP Season 77 women’s volleyball at The Arena in San Juan.
Bernadette Pons fired 15 points, Remy Palma had 10 points, including three service aces and two blocks, while libero Tin Agno, playing her final season for the Lady Tamaraws, collected 14 digs.
In men’s play, University of Santo Tomas (UST) tripped University of the East (UE), 25-18, 25-22, 25-21, while UP fashioned out a 22-25, 25-21, 25-14, 22-25, 15-12 victory over De La Salle to join opening day winners National University and Ateneo.
Mark Gil Alfafara had two blocks to finish with 21 points, while Romnick Rico tossed in 13 points as the Growing Tigers spoiled the debut of Red Warriors rookie Edward Camposano who fired 17 hits.
Veteran Angeli Araneta had to miss the opener due to a medical entrance exam to take, forcing Lady Maroons coach Jerry Yee to use his rookies Alisa Buitre and Caryl Sandoval, who felt the pressure playing in front of a huge crowd at the San Juan venue.
Team captain Nicole Tiamzon, who shrugged off the effects of a minor motorcycle accident two days before the opener, finished with 12 points, while Chester Ong had two blocks for a seven-point outing for UP.
Wendel Miguel fired 18 points, while Evan Raymundo and Frederick Abunda had 15 hits apiece for the Fighting Maroons.
