THE Fédération Internationale de Basketball Association (FIBA) denied the appeal of Lebanon for the lifting of the indefinite suspension imposed on the country that is barring it from joining the 27th FIBA-Asia Men’s Basketball Cham-pionship on August 1 to 11 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
“The governance issues af-fecting basketball in Lebanon are much deeper and much more serious than the mere absence of proper appeal and disciplinary regulations within your statutes. Accordingly we are regretfully not in a position to reconsider our decision of July 11, 2013, and the Lebanese basketball federation remains suspended,” reads a statement released by the FIBA.
“Despite your attempts and those of the FIBA ASIA secretary-general within the past few days to find solutions to these issues, the situation remains highly unstable,” the statement further said.
The Lebanese team, which is bracketed in Group B along with Japan, Qatar and Hongkong, arrived in Manila last week to resume their preparation for the meet.
Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star reported that team has already booked a return flight to their country and will arrive in Beirut on Saturday.
“It is unfortunate that Lebanon will not be able to participate. We feel sorry for the team, which is in Manila early as part of its prepa-ration for the champion-ship. We can only wish them well and hope for positive develop-ments in the future,” said Sonny Barrios, exe-cutive director of the organizer Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, Inc.
