Filfest, founded and headed by Vicky Zubiri, presented Myra Mae and Friends in operatic arias and Broadway songs. The cast consisted of Viva Voce singers Myra Mae Meneses, Anna Migallos, Iona Ventocilla, Michaela Fajardo, Carlo Falcis, Raymond Yadao, Roby Malubay and Carlo Mañalac.

Meneses shone for her exquisite timber, power and profoundly moving expression, as did Migallos for her full, sonorous voice. Falcis sang with intense dramatic passion.

Arias from Mozart’s Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, Bizet’s Carmen and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, among many others were interpreted. The latter two were particularly enchanting as rendered by the entire ensemble, the voices voluminously throbbing and pulsating.

Arresting attention was “Drink!” from Student Prince with the male voices in robust, staccato rhythm. Ol’ Man River from “Showboat” by Kern and Hammerstein demanded a much bigger, deeper voice but it was movingly performed.

Songs from Les Miserables, West Side Story and earlier, from L’Elisir D’ Amore and La Fille Du Regiment by Donizetti, Lakme by Delibes further made a heady, curious, charming mix of classic and popular songs which thoroughly delighted and entertained music lovers at Insular Life Auditorium in Alabang.

 A prayer
A reader sends the following prayer with the admonition that whoever recites it nine times a day will have his/her petition granted on the ninth day. The sender adds that it has never been known to fail.

“May the sacred heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world, now and forever. Sacred heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us.”

Our country needs this prayer for the upcoming elections. May the voters be guided accordingly. God grant this nation a miracle.
