FORMER World Boxing Organization women’s super bantamweight champion Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton of the Philippines has made her jump into mixed martial arts (MMA) and is scheduled to fight in One Fighting Championship: Rise of Heroes on May 2 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Loren Mack, senior public relation officer of One FC, Asia’s largest MMA league, confirmed to The Manila Times that the former super bantamweight titleholder would make her debut in One FC: Rise of Heroes against a yet to be determined foe.
“Yes she signed already with us and we are all very excited to see her One FC debut in May 2 here in Manila,” Mack said. “Her fans are looking forward to her first fight in One FC.”
Julaton, 33, who holds a 13-4-1 win-loss-draw record with two knockouts in her boxing career, said that she has considered entering MMA before, adding now is the perfect time because she has already familiarized herself with the sport’s rules and the environment.
“I have the background in martial arts since I was 10 years old and I’ve always had an interest in UFC,” Julaton told reporter Kevin Iole of yahoo.com sports.
Julaton is the second significant female boxer to enter MMA in recent years, the first one being Holly Holm. Julaton said though that she is not giving up her boxing career and plans to fight on May 29 in her campaign to regain a world title.
