Filipino Alberto Lim Jr. advanced to the quarterfinals of the Hong Kong Open Junior Tennis Championships 2013 at the Victoria Park Tennis Courts in Causeway Bay.
The No. 6 seed Lim qualified for the next round following the retirement of Chak Pong Marco Lam of Hong Kong in their second round match. :o, was ahead, 4-6, 6-2, 3-0, when Lam withdraw because of cramps.
Lim will be up against Hei Yin Andrew Li of Hong Kong who upset third pick Teeradon Tortrakul of Thailand, 7-5, 6-2, in the Grade 3 tournament sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation.
“Alberto is learning how to grind and fight more to win matches. He now realizes to win here in this circuit you must be always ready to prepare your mind to fight and engage your opponent in a battle,” said coach Manny Tecson.
The day’s biggest casualty was top seed Jurence Zosimo Mendoza, who absorbed a shocking 6-2, 6-2 loss to unseeded Soon Woo Kwon of South Korea in the second round.
In doubles, Lim and Mendoza cruised into the semifinals with a 0-1 (retired) win over Thailand’s Atikan Juprang and Nawakan Khunjan.
The Filipino pair earlier defeated Taiwan’s Han Yu Chen and Tung-Lin Wu, 7-5, 2-6, 10-5.
Lim and Mendoza will take on the winner of the match between No. 3 Lin Wei-De and Yang Shang-Chi of Taiwan, and wild card entry Chak Pong Marco Lam and Anthony Jackie Tang of Hong Kong.
