ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer believes that all the scheduled fights in Pinoy Pride XXIII: ‘Filipinos kontra Latinos’ on Saturday are highly competitive enough to push their boxers to the limit.
Aldeguer said that all foreign opponents are highly ranked and good enough to challenge our boxers headed by current world champions World Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes and WBO minimum weight champion Merlito Sabillo.
“We really need to do this, give them a tough opponent every fight,” said Aldeguer. “We can’t provide our boxers patsy opponents because ALA wants to produce world champions. It is getting more competitive in every fight, so I’m telling them to train harder.”
Nietes (31-1-4 win-loss-draw slate with 17 knockouts) will face knockout artist Sammy Gutierrez (33-9-2 record with 23 knockouts), while Sabillo (23-0 with 12 Kos) will defend his title for that third time against undefeated Carlos Buitrago (27-0 with 16 KOs) of Nicaragua.
“Our former fight Rey Boom Boom Bautista and current fighter AJ Banal had suffered defeats here in their own country because they fought the best opponents out there,” he added. “And that’s okay with, but I’m hopeful for the win of all the Filipinos.”
Milan Melindo and AJ Banal will compete against Jose Alfredo Rodriguez of Mexico and Lucian Gonzalez of Puerto Rico, respectively.
Meanwhile, Jason “El Niño” Pagara fights Vladimir Baez of Dominican Republic.
The weigh-in scheduled is set at the Robinson Galleria in Ortigas City while the fight night on Saturday is at the Araneta Coliseum.
