The Philippine gymnastics junior team won 22 gold medals in the 2013 Prime Gymnastics International Invitational Championship held recently at the Bisham Sport Stadium in Singapore.
Veteran gymnasts Carlos Yulo and Fortunato Abad led the squad with five gold medals each in their divisions.
Yulo, who will represent the country in the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, topped the floor exercise (13.900), ring (6.627), vault (12.750) and horizontal bar (5.970) events in the 17-under Session 4 category. He also steered the Philippines to a gold medal finish the team event.
Yulo added a silver in the overall individual with 50.054 points.
Abad also made his presence felt in the 18-under class as he earned the overall individual gold with 71.016. He ruled the pummel horse (11.370), ring (12.857), parallel bar (12.157) and horizontal bar (11.370) and wound up second in the floor exercise (11.167) and vault (12.075).
“It was a strong finish for our junior team. The extensive training under Romanian coach Jana bore fruits and hopefully we sustained our winning in the international stage in time for our participation in the Youth Olympics next year,” said Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) President Cynthia Carrion.
Also winning golds are Allen Christopher Lim (overall individual and pummel horse) in the 17-under Session 4; Reyland Capellan (floor and vault) in the 18-under class; Margarita Ann Francisco (floor) in the 11-over event; Cristina Onofre (vault and floor), Eugenie Marie Dominique Evangelista (bars and overall), Raya Angela Nazario (beam) in the Senior Individual Session 4; and Regine Reynoso (vault) and Rachekke Arellano (floor) in the Junior Individual Session 4.
