Filipino national master wins Riyadh rapid chess



Filipino National Master Elwin Retanal ruled the Saudi Riyadh International Rapid Chess Championship-Al Riyadh Open Tournament 2013 in Saudi Arabia.

Retanal, a former national junior champion, scored 10 points on 10 wins and one loss in the 11-round tournament.

His victories include a stunning win over top seed International Master Mohamed Tissir of Morocco in the sixth round. His lone defeat came in the hands of Gaafar Hassan of Egypt in the seventh round.

Tissir settled for second with 9.5 points.

Other Filipino entries in the tournament were fourth placer Alvin Alcala (eight points), No. 10 Aldrin Gallardo (7.5 points), No. 12 Anatoly Guaniezo (7.5 points), no. 17 Noli Delloro (seven points) and No. 21 Drigo Teves (seven points).

In the 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2013 men’s standard chess in Incheon, South Korea, Grandmaster (GM) Mark Paragua dropped to 19th place with three points after five rounds.

GM Oliver Barbosa also fell to 22nd spot with 2.5 points.

Chinese GM Yu Yangyi took the solo lead with 4.5 points while GMs Mohd Ahmed Al Medaihki of Qatar, Abdulrahman Salem of United Arab Emirates, Deep Sengupta of Independent Olympic Athletes and Ding Liren of China are sharing the second place with four points.

In the women’s division, Janelle Mae Frayna is in a tie for third with 4.5 points. Behind leader Chinese Woman GMs Hao Yifan (5.5 points) and Zhao Xue (five points).
