Filipino pugs suffer losses in Kazakhstan


Three Filipino boxers absorbed setbacks against their respective highly touted opponents in the second round of the AIBA (International Boxing Association) World Elite Men’s Championships being held at the Sholak Palace of Sports in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga succumbed to London Olympic Games silver medalist and fifth seed Veitia Soto of Cuba in the light flyweight division while unheralded bantamweight Mario Fernandez bowed to No. 4 Shiva Thapa of India.

Roldan Boncales, on the other hand, was beaten by North Korean Ri Chung Il in the flyweight class.

They all lost via unanimous decision (0-3).

Earlier, Dennis Galvan was ousted by Gaybatulla Gadzhialiyev of Azerbaijan in the light welterweight division.
