Filipino reaches tennis singles semis in Asian Youth Games



Filipino Jurence Zosimo Mendoza made it to the boys’ singles semifinals of the 2nd Asian Youth Games tennis competitions in Nanjing, China.

Mendoza outclassed Wong Hong Kit of Hong Kong in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-2 on Wednesday for his third straight win. He crushed Nepal’s Abhishek Bastola in the first round, 6-0, 6-1, and Kuwait’s Rashid Albader in the second, 6-0, 6-1.

The second-seeded Mendoza will be up against Garvit Batra of Independent Olympic Athletes in the semifinals. Batra advanced to the semifinals by trouncing Abdulla Ahli of the United Arab Emirates in the first round, 6-0, 6-0, seventh seed Qui Zhuoyang of China in the second, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5, and Roman Khassanov of Kazkahstan in the quarters, 6-1, 6-1.

The Philippines has one gold and one silver in the Asian Youth Games.

Junior golfers Mia Legaspi and Princess Superal dominated the girls’ individual event as they finished 1-2 on Tuesday.

In athletics, Emily Jean Obiena finished fifth overall in the girls’ pole vault event with a jump of 3.10 meters. Chinese Li Chaoqun took the gold with 4.00 meters while Yang Shuting of China (3.55m) and Lin Tsai-Ying of Taiwan (3.55m) settled for silver and bronze, respectively.

In the girls’ 100m dash, Kayla Richardson placed fifth with a time of 12.30 seconds while her twin sister Kyla ended up sixth in 12.38 seconds. Ge Manqi of China topped the event in 11.91 seconds.
