The country’s hope of a podium finish in the open swimming marathon competitions of the 5th Asian Beach Games faded on Sunday after Axel Toni Steven Ngui and Courtney Melissa Gray lost in their respective events.
Ngui clocked 1:05:14.0 in the men’s 5km event to finish 10th among 14 participants, while Gray placed eighth in the women’s 10km event with a time of 2:38:41.8 in the tournament held at the Bien Dong Park in Danang City, Vietnam.
On Friday, Gray placed 11th and Maria Claire Adorna was 10th when they competed in the women’s 5km event. Jessie Khing Lacuna finished 11th in the men’s 10km event.
Vitaliy Khudyakov of Kazakhstan ruled the men’s 5km event in 50:03.3 while Mohammad Saleh of Syria clocked 58:10.6 to finish second. Vietnamese Tran Tan Trieu placed third with a time of 58:54.1.
Khudyakov also won the gold in the men’s 10km event last Friday.
China had a 1-2 finish in the women’s 10km event with Xin Xin winning the gold medal in 2:14:01.6 and Yang Dandan clocking 2:14:14.8 to take the silver medal.
Kazakhstan’s Xeniya Romanchuk took the bronze medal with a time of 2:14:20.0.
