Promising wrestler Brandon Basa led the winners of the recently-concluded Third Annual Philippines Wrestling Showcase held in Vallejo, California.
Carson City’s Basa scored a couple of victories against Kyle Creech of Benicia and Derek Reyes of Vallejo to rule the Open Freestyle event. He also dominated the Open Greco category after pinning down Creech in the finals.
Basa’s grandfather, Jose Ma. Basa, was appointed by former President Ferdinand Marcos to train the Filipino wrestlers for an event in Edmonton, Canada in the 1970’s.
Jeremiah Esguerra of American Canyon (Open Freestyle and Open Greco), Jobel Cabigting of Vallejo (Open Freestyle and Open Greco), Marlon Cereca of Vallejo (Open Freestyle) and Ricki Liang of Vallejo (Open Freestyle) also scored victories in their respective events.
Winners in the Middle School Folkstyle are Springtowne’s Maiya Alemania, Trinity Jade Castillo, Miliani Rose Jimenez-Diolanto, Meriel Ferrer, Precious Bautista, Alyssa Geronimo, Rylee Cruz-Smith, Hazel Solar, Kiara Valle, Lillian Parungao, Chentelle Wise, Elisabeth Franco, Leika Lopez, Caesha Gemo and Ariana, and Benicia’s Basil Othman and Tara Othman.
“It is an annual wrestling event in Vallejo City, California exclusively for Filipino-American wrestlers. It is also part of Wrestling Association of the Philippines’ talent search,” said Wrestling Association of the Philippines (WAP) Secretary General Karlo Sevilla.
The organizing committee of the tournament will donate 30 wrestling uniforms to the WAP, which will be distributed to the wrestling clubs of Baguio, Ifugao and Antique.
