The Filipino differently abled athletes won nine gold, 26 silver and 24 bronze medals in the Special Olympics Asia-Pacific Games 2013 held recently in New Castle, Australia.
Daniel Lanceta spearheaded the country’s campaign by winning two gold medals in swimming. He dominated the men’s 50m free M1 event in 46.99 seconds then copped his second gold in the 50m breaststroke M2 with a time of 1:00.52.
Angelyn Catbagan added one gold in the women’s 20m backstroke F1 (22.53).
The bowling team contributed three golds courtesy of Rey Odicta (men’s singles bowling M05), Sara Ungson (women’s bowling singles F04), Mark David Inductivo, Roxanne Ng, Rey Odicta and Anton Silos in the team event M6.
Bocce has two golds (men’s doubles M.02 and men’s doubles M.08). The football team ruled the five-a-side category.
The silver medals were from women’s team M5 division, mixed team M4 division, men’s team M5, women’s doubles F03 and men’s singles M06 in bowling; women’s singles F.01, women’s doubles F.01, men’s doubles M.02 and men’s doubles M.14 in bocce; women’s 4×25 freestyle relay, women’s 50m butterfly F2, women’s 25m backstroke, women’s 25m freestyle F1, women’s 25m free F1, men’s 50m free M5, men’s 50m back M4 and women’s 25m free F2 in swimming; women’s shot put F6, women’s 4x100m relay F2, men’s 4x100m relay M2, men’s 400m run M1, men’s 100m run M23 and men’s long jump M9 in athletics; mixed X9 and mixed X9 MS-A in badminton; and the football 11-a-side team.
The Filipino contingent also bagged medals in bowling men’s doubles—M06, women’s doubles M06, men’s doubles M08, women’s singles F05, women’s doubles M03, women’s singles F09, men’s singles M06, women’s doubles M07, team M1, men’s doubles M03 and men’s doubles M06; athletics’ men’s 100m run M09, women’s 100m run F12, men’s 100m run M06, men’s 100m run M10, men’s 4x100m relay M2, men’s long jump M6, men’s 200m run M07 and men’s 100m M07; swimming men’s 4x25m freestyle relay M1, men’s 50m freestyle M4 and men’s 50m butterfly M2; and bocce women’s doubles F.07 and women’s doubles F.01.
