According to an online survey conducted by Oppo Philippines, 48 percent out of over 6,000 Filipinos take two to five selfies a day. From the same set of respondents, it was also known that 43 percent take selfies at work while 31 percent do it at home. Twenty-two percent have the courage to take photos of themselves in public.
Another important data revealed was that 42 percent of these respondents of all ages from different parts of the country generally post their selfies on social media.
Because of this knowledge, Oppo, which is a global tech company with Chinese origins, is bringing to the Philippines a new model catering to selfie-addict Filipinos.
Dubbed the “Selfie Expert,” the F1 was officially unveiled on February 24 at the Trinoma Activity Center in Quezon City.
“Our online survey has proven that, yes, Filipinos do love taking selfies,” expressed Oppo Philippines operations manager Garrick Hung in an interview with The Manila Times, proudly adding that F1 could take care of this growing practice.
He explained, “What makes F1 unique than other Oppo smartphones is that we focused on its camera . . . We pride in the research that Oppo had really invested on the phone to be able to call it as a ‘Selfie Expert’,” the executive explained.
With this, the executive then named some of the features that make the new model a true selfie expert—beginning with the phone’s front camera.
The camera responsible for all the selfies, it comes with an 8-megapixel, f/2.0-aperture, and a 1/4-inch sensor. Combined with an 84-degree-wide angle camera lens, it receives 40 percent more light than most smartphones.
Moreover, Hung noted that the camera application also comes with its built-in Beauty 3.0+ feature. Offering eight various filters, it can brighten the skin, and remove blemishes. It’s LED display that can also double as flash in low-light environments.
The rear camera is as amazing with a 13-megapixel sensor, f/2.2 aperture lens, Pure Image 2.0+ features, and a number of customizations to fit the user’s photo needs.
Another notable feat of the F1 is that it runs with the latest version of Oppo’s original operating system, the ColorOS.
As an Android-based OS, The Manila Times asked what makes the ColorOS different?
Hung answered, “Thanks to our ColorOS, our cameras are equipped with the beautify function, as well as features like double exposure and GIF, among others. Colors are clearer and sharper as well.”
Besides this, the operating system also offers more security, as well as better clean-up and phone management.
To run smoothly, the ColorOS is backed by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 SoC with four cores at 1.7GHz and four cores at 1.2GHz and 3GB RAM.
Besides its software, F1 also boasts of a hardware that a user can proudly flash when taking photos. Available in two colors, Gold and Rose Gold, the smartphone has a fine and delicate smoothening of zircon and sand blasting create a back cover that has a velvet-like softness despite being made of metal. The 5-inch HD screen is protected by a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass coating and aluminum housing.
Hung further talked business with The Manila Times by sharing some of the Oppo Philippines present and future plans.
On top of his list was their official sponsorship of the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Why enter this strategic partnership with PBA, the operations manager answered, “The best way to reach to more Filipinos is through something that they love. And of course, if we talk about sports, the first thing that comes to the minds of Filipinos is basketball. It played everywhere!”
On the question how are Chinese smartphone brands faring compared to its already-established Korean competitors, Hung answered, “I can only speak for Oppo. In terms of our market here, we are proud to say that majority of our retailers say that we are part of their top 3 brands.”
In terms of endorsement, Hung expressed that as of the moment, they are content and happy with their current celebrity ambassador, Sarah Geronimo.
He noted, “She’s been very loyal to us, and to our phones. Same time, we are showing her our loyalty as well.”
Finally, as the company continues to grow in the Philippine market, Hung promised “We may be selling a handful of models but we are focused that we deliver the right products to our consumers.”
Oppo has six series of smartphones namely Joy, Neo, Fine, N, R and the newest, F series.
